Post-conference 4-day field trip (19^th-22^nd October 2024)

Geology and mineral deposits of the northern Flinders Ranges

This trip combines an introduction to the geology and mineralisation styles of the northern Flinders Ranges with an opportunity to experience South Australia’s outback, and Flinders Ranges aboriginal culture. The Flinders Ranges is blessed with an inspiring landscape, which is under-pinned by the geology, in which we will see evidence of Earth’s earliest complex animal life.  Located 500 kilometres north of Adelaide, the newly established Nilpena Ediacara National Park  has been featured as one of the world’s must-visit destinations for 2024 by Explore Travel. Not only has it become a hub for the study of Ediacaran fossils, the site has attracted the attention of scientists and conservationists including the likes of NASA and Sir David Attenborough.

This 4-day field trip will showcase the geology of the Neoproterozoic including the World Heritage nominated Nilpena Ediacara National Park and iconic Brachina Gorge Geological Trail. Planned visits comprise several historic and active mine sites that demonstrate examples of sediment-hosted magnesite, diapir-related copper and zinc silicate mineralisation. Each having its own geochemical story to ponder and debate. The return to Adelaide will incorporate a roadside stop of Jurassic kimberlite followed by an afternoon winery visit within the beautiful Clare Valley.
